AMD Retail Boxed CPU Review

AMD Retail Boxed CPU Review

Recently we purchased 2 of the AMD Phenom  2x 550 Retail Box CPUs which include a basic AMD Heat sink and Cooling Fan.

We had noticed that the CPUs where running very hot if under heavy load “Usage” between 60-70c

We have found that the compound grease supplied by AMD not to be very good, so we conducted a test.  On the two computers, we used Nero Vision to make the pc run at full load so we could get an idea on the CPU Temperatures.

First Test on PC 1 using original supplied AMD Compound Grease (Max Temp 68-70c) when using Neo Vision to burn a DVD running for 40 minutes.

Removed CPU Cooler and applied replacement Grease from Maplins

Ran Nero Vision again and now (Max Temp 51-52c)

----

Second PC – using original supplied AMD Compound Grease (Max Temp 59-60c) when using
Neo Vision to burn a DVD running for 40 minutes.

Removed CPU Cooler and applied replacement grease and ran the Nero Vision software again, this time the Max Temp for the second PC was (Max 47-48c)

So, if anyone experiences CPU heat issues, consider replacing the compound grease and test again, you should see a big improvement.
